When we searched for the video on Youtube, several such old videos surfaced with the title “satellite images of Indonesia earthquake” mostly attributed to satellite map provider Maxar, a space technology company related to 2018 earthquake.
The 2018 earthquake had triggered a tsunami, which led to soil liquefaction in Petabo, Palu City, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. It was captured in a time-lapse video uploaded on YouTube by a channel called ‘DAHB00777’ in 2018.
The video was also shared by the head of BNPB, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the national agency for disaster counter measure in Indonesia. But the latest earthquake on November 21, 2022 left behind a heavy death toll in West Java province with an epicentre of the 5.6 magnitude earthquake near the Cianjur town, about 75 km from the capital, Jakarta. No such time-lapse video has been released so far.
Claim: Satellite image of earthquake taking place in Indonesia.
Conclusion: The video is from Indonesia but shows the satellite imagery of the earthquake that hit the country in 2018 not the 2022 quake.
