Fact
A Google reverse image search on the keyframes of the viral video led us to an article by Scroll.in, dated November 12, 2021, titled ‘Watch: On Chennai’s Marina Beach, the sea has risen up to the road after heavy rain.’

The report featured a tweet by @Crime_Selvaraj, dated November 11, 2021, carrying the viral footage, “Marina beach sea shore extended up to the service road…,” confirming that the video is not related to Cyclone Mandous, but is at least one-year-old.

Additionally, we found that the viral video was uploaded by several Facebook, Twitter and YouTube users in November 2021 to show the situation at Marina Beach in Chennai.

Chennai had received incessant rainfall in November last year. The observatory in Nungambakkam had recorded 1044.3mm of rainfall in November 2021 — just 4.5 mm short of the 1049mm rainfall recorded in November 2015 — that caused unprecedented floods and inundated Chennai. The walkway and the other infrastructure seen in the video (including the lighthouse) confirm that the video was indeed recorded at Marina Beach, but our investigation reveals that the video is one year old.
